‘Beauty and the Beast’ Debuts to $350 Worldwide

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast has become a global box office sensation following its opening weekend in theaters, debuting with a fairytale $350 million worldwide.

The $160 million live action remake of the 1991 animated classic charted as the second biggest March global debut (just behind Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’s $424.1 million opening), earning $180 million internationally and an additional $170 million at the domestic box office, and topping the box office in nearly every market where it screened.

The film played in 44 major international locations representing 66% of the international market, netting $44.8 million in China, $22.8 million in the United Kingdom, $11.9 million in South Korea, $10.7 million in Germany, and $7.6 million in Italy.  The film has yet to open in France, Australia, and Japan.

The film even performed well in Russia, where its launch was overshadowed by controversy surrounding the inclusion of a gay character, with authorities shoring up the country's notorious anti-LGBT laws by giving the film a higher rating to limit younger audience’s access.
