I am trying to get into movie set construction, can anyone point me in the right direction?

Where are you from? That would be a good start. Call up your Local IATSE Union and see if they have either apprentice spots or some advice for you in the area. Also don't discount making your own dreamed up sets and just showing them on YouTube.
