Disney Dark
By Matthew S. Surprenant

Film has come a long way since the late eighties and early nineties. These days, though we see primarily the same genres in the market, more and more producers are willing to blend ideas in a way which treats intelligently caters to wider age groups. Perhaps my favorite spawning of the modern era is what I call “Disney Dark.”

Do film schools do enough to promote good audio?
By Peter Santana

I recently had the pleasure of viewing a number of film school productions and I was astounded at the high level of work being created. The majority of student I recently had the pleasure of viewing a number of film school productions and I was astounded at the high level of work being created. The majority of student films displayed keen attention to filmic detail and were very well produced, however despite all that hard work, some still seemed unprofessional and incomplete. The simple reason being that the sound was often completely neglected.

The True Value of Production Sound

Productions need to understand and respect the value of high quality Production Sound. Every hearing person knows that it doesn’t take an audio professional to immediately perceive that when audio is bad, video becomes difficult to watch. Simply put, film is the symbiosis of Sound & Image. (more…)

Close Quarters: Indie and Improv at its finest

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

A film about sex, betrayal, friendship, jealousy, love, hate, death, and coffee.

Close Quarters is a fairly unique concept to come across; originally a series of fourteen short sketches, all rolled into one feature film, and then cast with some of the finest improv actors in Chicago. Having wrapped up late last year, the film is now hitting the festival circuit, and hoping for a US debut very soon.

Thanks Be to the Character Actor

Thursday, March 1st, 2012
From the NewsRadio episode Super Karate Monkey Death Car

“It's not just about the almighty dollar. It's also about the plucky little dime, the omniscient nickel, and the ferocious quarter.”

Maybe it’s a testament to why I have pursued a career in theatre and film, but I have always been fascinated by the character actors that have made up our cinematic landscape. I mean sure, my pre-pubescent heart was ignited by the likes of Marty McFly and Uncle Jesse, but as early as the sixth grade I was enthralled by Jimmy James, and an appearance by David Paymer would make me positively gleeful. I was there in the movie theater or on the sinking, living room couch with my friends, excitedly elbowing them and exclaiming, “Oh my God, it’s THAT guy!” (more…)

The 17th Chicago Underground Film Festival

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Chicago underground film festival 2010 cuff

The Chicago Underground Film Festival exists to showcase the defiantly independent filmmaker. They aim to “promote films and videos that dissent radically in form, technique, or content from the ‘indie’ mainstream and to present adventurous works that challenge and transcend commercial and audience expectations”.

Held this year from June 24th until July 1 at the Gene Siskel Film Center, CUFF has a reputation of highlighting the quirky, abstract, even oblique and tangent works that other film festivals often overlook. This year’s move to summer dates means it will also avoid calendar clashes with other events, and their presence as the world’s longest running underground film fest means that this could be worth adding to your calendar.

If you think that your film fits the above description, then the final deadline is March 15 and any last minute entries cost $40. Check out the full guide and download an entry form from http://cuff.org/2010/guide.html

Although not a competitive festival, CUFF does present awards, in categories including Narrative Feature, Narrative Short, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short, Experimental, Animation and Music Video. There are also ‘Made in Chicago’ and ‘Audience Choice’ awards.

Keep up to date on the festival via Twitter, Facebook and Myspace.
