About The Job

Composer Omar Shahryar and circus artist Matthew Denley are looking for a librettist/dramatist to collaborate with to create two new chamber operas for 2013 and 2014 based on two existing short stories by the children's author, Nicholas Stuart Gray.

The libretto for the first opera will be devised between March-May 2013, and the second opera will be devised in early 2014.

The desired applicant should be:

first and foremost a confident dramatist (NO previous libretto writing experience is required)
an enthusiastic and collaborative team-player
interested in different art forms (circus, puppetry, dance, art) as well as science
passionate about music-theatre/opera

This project would best suit a librettist who:

is happy to adapt an existing story into a piece of drama
can maintain the language style of the original stories whilst having the imagination to add material where it is dramatically appropriate
is willing to work closely with the composer to create the libretto

Extra kudos will be acknowledged for anyone who:

is interested in a workshop/devising process with other artists
would be willing to co-lead outreach work related to the projects
would like to help in any way with applications for funding / publicity

The librettist can be based anywhere in the world.

This is the brilliantly ambitious debut project for Omar and Matthew. The pieces will be performed in opera and theatre festivals around Europe.

We are determined that there will be payment for the project, but it will be dependent on funding applications that will be submitted AFTER a collaborator has been found.

To apply, email a CV, an example of dramatic work, and/or a link to your website BY FRIDAY 22nd FEBRUARY.
