FEATURED: DJ Moniz, DJ, Producer, A&R Scout

In our continuing FEATURED series, we talk to some of our subscribers about their career in music, how they got their break, what projects they're working on now and what advice they would give to those looking to make steps forward.

This week we're featuring London based DJ, Producer, A&R Scout and Club Manager, MONIZ

1) What inspired you to want to work in the music industry?

From an early age my dad encouraged me into classical music with private piano tuition. From playing the piano, my love for music grew and then I bought my first pair of turntables and have never looked back.

2) How did you go about getting your foot in the door?

I started DJ-ing by taking over the music at friends parties and then it progressed into small gigs and then clubs. It was by no means without challenge but tenacity and perseverence pays in this popular industry. Confidence in your own abilities and growth are traits that will hold you in good stead.

3) What album and artist(s) had the most impact on you?

Hip hop is my foremost influence and the Chronic album by Dr Dre, got me hooked. It remains an iconic and timeless piece of work which has withstood the test of a constantly changing genre. I am still a lover of the old skool cuts…even it is to educate the younger generation as music habits change over time.

4) Career highlight so far?

DJ-ing a hiphop night in the super club Amnesia, Ibiza for the 2007 season. This was a bold move by the club as they had never had a hip hop night there before in their 30 year plus history on a predominantly house party island. Opening my club in Cardiff was also another personal triumph - the 411 nightclub, now Room112 in Cardiff has been going from strength to strength for the last 7 years despite fierce challenges in the Nightclub Industry.

5) Best bit of advice for those looking to break into the industry and what to expect?

Do it if you love it. Like in every industry there are ups and downs but just stay focused on quality. Passion for the art is essential as persistence is the one quality which will get you to where you want to be in the industry. The use of social media and access to a global population makes the possibilities exciting and limitless!

6) What projects are you working on at the moment?

Working on setting up a super funky hiphop night in London plus working on a mixtape with my mc Joe Kong HD. Producing is my ultimate indulgence as it fuels my creativity and gives a music artist a voice that can impact the individual as well as the masses.
