FEATURED: Marcus Sullivan, Music Graduate

In our continuing FEATURED series, we talk to some of our subscribers about their career in music, how they got their break, what projects they're working on now and what advice they would give to those looking to make steps forward.

This week we're featuring Music Graduate, Marcus Sullivan

1) What inspired you to want to work in the music industry?

I’ve been a music fanatic from a very early age. To me, music is a very instinctive, primal thing. It’s in our DNA and plays a very key part in bringing us together as a race. Therefore, it is obvious that I should wish to support and dedicate my life to it. It’s all rhythm and vibrations. As I remember Jack White quoting in coffee and cigarettes, “You know, Nikola Tesla believed the world was an acoustic resonator.”

 2) How did you go about getting your foot in the door?

By gaining experience in other industries and then searching for job vacancies in the Music Industry. I’m a fairly new subscriber to Music Match, so I’m just getting to grips with the service. I definitely hold no regrets in subscribing. The access you get to opportunities in the industry is unparalleled. I’m sure it wont be too long before I have some luck. For the meantime, I’ll keep on applying.

 3) What album and artist(s) had the most impact on you?

Any album from the discography of King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard. That band seems to be the gift that keeps on giving. They honestly might be one of the main bands making a real effort to be prolific, and it seems like they’re doing it effortlessly, which is something I really admire. Each time they release something, it turns out to be just as suprising as the release before it. Also, they never fail to deliver mind-melting, fuzzy, outer space, psychedelic earworms. Check out the album ‘Nonagon Infinity’ to begin your musical journey. You can thank me later.

 4) Career highlight so far?

Musicwise? Completing my Diploma in ‘Music Production & Technology’ at The Academy of Contemporary Music. I learnt so many valuable things there in terms of professional industry practise, competition skills and audio principles. It’s been a great foundation for building a musical career.

 5) Best bit of advice for those looking to break into the industry and what to expect?

Work hard.
Be persistent.
Go the extra mile.
Stand out from the crowd.

6) What projects are you working on at the moment?

I’m always song-writing, recording and producing music, it’s what I’m passionate about. I'm also a film fanatic, so i'm big into the idea of mixing the two mediums, soundtracking etc. I’ve been planning on putting a new band together for a while and playing some material live. Mind you I’m still saving up for that Fender Jazzmaster!
