BundokI've just recently graduated with my BS in Digital Media and am constantly confronted by the daunting task of negotiating salaries or "naming my price" but I have no idea what someone with my experience and position should be asking for.
I do Visual Effects, mostly rotoscoping and compositing work in Shake; but also have experience as a videographer. Is there a resource out there that gives going rates for certain jobs in whatever city you're in? Any information is helpful.

Starting off with a disclaimer:
There are many variables to be considered.
What I am putting done here is based on personal experience, friends and fellow artists, and centric to the LA area. It is by no means intended to be the definitive perspective.
-Try to never work for free
-Always try to be realistic about what you are worth up or down
-Until you can truly command your price be flexible
Well I am a working Digital Compositor with over 6 years of experience in the industry above and below the line and what I have seen here in LA goes something like this as far as Compositors / 2D artists are concerned.
Indie producers will pay nothing to about $150 a day for a 10 hour day for a junior to intermediate level artist. They rarely will bring on a Senior artist
Boutique VFX shops will pay $15 to $25 an hour for the same level of expertise
Commercial Projects will pay typically more money because the turn around is usually brutal
and you are usually on a Flame or Inferno
Senior artists in LA (mind you) usually make anywhere between $350 and $600 a day w/o equipment.
Senior artist usually have a minimum of 5 years of experience in any given package with a fairly long list of higher profile shows and commercials under their belt.
In addition, they typically have a strong working knowledge in secondary compositing packages and parallel software like boujou or Syntheyes, Silhouette, motor, photoshop, a little 3D, etc.
Master Artists that I know make stupid money, but they are exceptional at what they do and usually have more than ten years in and have worked on some of the highest profile projects ever. When I say sick, I mean like $70 to $100 an hour or more.
Many of these factors remain as variables.
-Compositing package you are using
-Level of Education and Experience
-Reputation
-Speed
-The type of project
-The length of the project
-The type of work you have done before
-The time of year
Anyway I gotta go. Hope this helps a little.
